A warm welcome to all Folketeers, old and new. Here’s what’s coming up as we strum, sing, and smile our way through the summer and into autumn! Friday 10th July — Jim Reynolds & Hilary Pavey: We’re kicking off July in fine style with two absolute gems of the acoustic world. If you’ve not yet had the pleasure, you’re in for a treat. Jim Reynolds brings a glorious mix of blues, ragtime, R&B, folk, and even a dash of music hall. One moment he’ll have you misty‑eyed with a tender ballad, the next he’ll be grinning at you over a cheeky ragtime shuffle. “His performances are an emotional journey… from deeply sensitive ballads to playful, tongue‑in‑cheek tunes.” Hilary Pavey, meanwhile, is pure warmth and wit. Her beautifully crafted songs and distinctive guitar style make every performance feel like a conversation with an old friend. Expect laughs, thoughtful moments, and plenty of heart. Together, they’re magic — and we’re lucky to have them. Don’t miss this one. Friday 17th July — Jez Lowe: A familiar face returns! Jez Lowe — songwriter extraordinaire, multi‑instrumentalist, and proud owner of the folk world’s most famous stripy jumper, (or two), — is back at the Woodman. As our website reminds us, “his visits to the club are fairly frequent… Jez was last with us exactly a year ago, and put on a wonderful show as he always does.” Expect top‑tier songwriting, North‑East charm, and the kind of performance that reminds you why you fell in love with folk music in the first place. Summer Break: The club takes a well‑earned rest after Jez’s visit. Enjoy the sunshine, keep those instruments in tune, and we’ll see you in September! Friday 18th September — Singers’ Night & Opening Membership We’re back — and YOU’RE the stars of the evening. Membership renewal is £8, and you’ll save £2 off every entrance fee all year. As our website wisely notes, “four visits then it’s all savings. Makes sense!” Singers’ Nights are always popular, so arrive early to grab a spot. Even better, pre‑book with Debby & Derry (details on the website homepage). Just remember: pre‑booked performers must arrive before 8pm or their slot may be reallocated. Friday 25th September — The Rosellys: For their third visit to the Woodman, The Rosellys return with their glorious blend of English country music — and yes, it’s Rose‑Leys, not Rose‑Ell‑Ees (we know you care). Their sound is heartfelt, polished, and full of love for the tradition. “They produce well‑crafted ballads as well as upbeat songs with a slightly rocky feel… all sung harmonically through the mic.” Tonight we get the full band — Rebecca, Simon, and the whole Rosellys crew. It’ll be a good’un. But don’t take our word for it… come down and see for yourself. Don’t forget! You can view lots of wonderful Woodman performances and much more, on the John Bailey YouTube Channel Bob & Des do Radio! Tune in to Black Country Radio Xtra to listen to Folk & Beyond with Bob Bignell and myself, you will hear some of the best Woodman FC, Bromsgrove FC and other local folk club guests and international folk legends from past, present and future. There is a new show every month, so tune in or click the link on the home page to support your local Folk radio station. Enjoy Yourself! Derry xx |
