Hi everyone Woody here again with a review of another fabulous night at the Woodman Folk Club; and as the chimes of Left Bank Two by the Noveltones faded into the distance the evening was opened by our MC, Chris Irving who was once again covering for the ailing Bryn Phillips.

Support prior to the main artists this week was club stalwart Dick Woodhouse who played a much enjoyed seven song set, which ranged from traditional songs such as “The Water of Tyne” and “Dancing At Whitsun” plus the Ann Lister classic “Icarus”; to four Jake Thackray songs, The Little Coal Black Foal, Nurse, The Hair of the Widow of Bridlington and On Again! On Again! All were very much enjoyed by not only the audience but also the band who I could hear laughing at the Jake songs in particular.

Jackson Williams are a four piece band from North Wales – Corwen to be precise, where as Chris pointed out there is statue of Owain Glyndwr, who swept into England some 600 plus years ago. The band comprises Deborah Jackson; lead vocals, Skeet Williams; guitar and harmony vocals, Sam Pritchard; Keyboards (which also doubled up as their bass guitar) and Andy Cooper; Cajon and general percussion. They play an eclectic mix of Blues, Country, and Folk, mostly composed by Skeet and three covers – Jimmy McCarthy’s “Ride On”; which they seemed surprised that we knew and joined in with; Don Maclean’s “Vincent” (Not American Pie, which is his other one we decided); Willie Nelson’s “The Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning” and the encore Christine McVie’s “Songbird”. Between these we were treated to another 15 excellent songs ranging from upbeat joining in songs, to contemplative songs reflecting on the sadder side of life. Each is an accomplished musician in their own field and enjoyed what they did, as did we.

And so, once again, another evening came to an end and the audience wended their way home to return another day.

I shall conclude as normal by saying

A Wonderful Night Was Had by All.
Here’s to The Next One.
