Newsletter - September 2015

08 Sep 2015

Well, there it was gone! Summer that is.….must admit, I blinked and missed it but never mind, there’s always next year!! Anyway, onwards and upwards and before we know it it’s Woodman opening time again, and we have a packed programme for you this September to kick-start the year off:

Friday 11th September will be the first one of our legendary Singers’ Nights. Don’t be disappointed, these singers nights are normally over-subscribed so do please contact Debby or Derry on 01384 560462 to ensure you get a floor spot, we have a maximum of 14 slots. Alternatively just come and enjoy the talent on display. A great night is guaranteed! Also it will be membership renewal night: only a fiver and you save a pound on every other night at the club. You know it makes sense!

Then on the 18th we are pleased to welcome Damien Barber & Mike Wilson.

You probably all know these two artistes, Damien as both a solo performer and the driving force behind the Demon Barber Roadshow, and Mike Wilson, the youngest member of the acclaimed Wilsons, the Teesside based family ensemble. However if, like me, you’ve never seen them as a duo before we can be certain that we’re in for a treat! With Damien providing the instrumentation on both guitar and concertina and two of the finest voices on the current folk scene, this will be a night I would not want to miss.

Friday the 25th brings us the very welcome return to the club of Liz Simcock.

Liz made her Woodman debut last year (sadly I missed it!) and was very well received, so naturally we had to re-book her to delight us once again. Liz is a singer/songwriter who performs in folk and acoustic clubs mainly in and around the Southeast. In 1999 she featured on the Playpen Album of New Acoustic Music alongside Eliza Carthy, Billy Bragg, Eddi Reader and Kathryn Williams. Since then she has trodden an independent path, recording three albums and gaining a glowing reputation.

A cracking start I’m sure you’ll agree so we are looking forward to seeing all the old, (in the nicest possible way), faces back at the club as well as all the lucky folks who’ve yet to find us! The rest of the year is mapped out already – do check the website – and we have a fantastic array of artistes lined up as well as all our talented resident performers so ‘come on down’… know you want to!

Also, our friends at Cookley have asked us to point out several events that are scheduled to be held there the first of which is in October and should be a cracker:-

Cookley Sebright School is holding another fundraising event and this time have been lucky enough to book none other than Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman! The gig is on Saturday 7th November 2015 at Cookley Sebright School, Lea Lane, Cookley, Worcestershire, DY10 3TA.
Doors open at 1930 and the gig starts at 2000.
