Writing Comes Hard To A Man |
||
|
This song is dedicated to the memory of one of the
Great Bluesmen, Mance Lipscomb. If you haven't heard any of his music, check
him out, he's good.
That's not the only reason I admire him. When he was young he taught himself to read and write. He did this by picking up scraps of paper from the floor of the commissary store and took them home to copy out the writing by lantern light. In an interview he came up with the immortal line "If you don't have your schooling, writing's gonna come hard to a man" |

Writing comes hard to a man Writing comes hard to a man When you ain't got no schoolin' You do the best you can Writing comes hard to a man It's hard and it's hard to be poor It's hard and it's hard to be poor But if you ain't got your pride It hurts just a little bit more And it's hard and it's hard to be poor There's one thing they'll never take from you There's one thing they'll never take from you When you got your reading and writing You got it your whole life through There's one thing they'll never take from you If you want to keep him ignorant and poor If you want to keep him ignorant and poor Don't leave no scraps of paper Lying around the commissary stores If you want to keep him ignorant and poor
