This song is a let out for failures. Everything you do, every decision you make, affects your future; but in the end, does it really matter? The idea came to me following a heated argument between two old men in their eighties during a committee meeting at a retirement home.

"You can’t talk to me like that, I was a bank manager, you know"

"I don’t care what you were, you’re just an old fogey like the rest of us now!"

They teach you how to crawl and they teach you how to run
They teach you how to read and write and how to do your sums
They teach you what's wrong and they teach you what's right
But they leave you alone as you learn how to fight
And the doors close on you
The doors close hard on you
As the doors close on you
You work hard to pass their tests
You want to please them so you do your best
They grade you high or they grade you low
They've got to decide where you're going to go
You might go to university
You might drop out or get a degree
You might work in a shop or you can get a trade
If you get a job you think you've got it made
Then you get married and you settle down
Your life is full as you rush around
You're always busy but you're never through
There's always another something else to do
You wish you didn't drink and you know you shouldn't smoke
Sometimes you feel like a walking joke
Your stuck in a rut and you can't get out
You don't even know what it's all about
They hand you your watch and you avoid their eyes
They don't even try to apologise
They've used you up and now they've discarded you
You've given your life and much more too
Now you retire and you learn to rest
You've given your life and you've given your best
You've more to give but they just don't want to know
They've finished with you now and they've let you go
You see a child who's young and small
You see a young man who's proud and tall
You see an old man who's bent and grey
You look in the mirror and can't turn away
You shut your eyes and you start to dream
And think about the way things might have been
But it doesn't matter now it would have ended the same
You've just been a player in a crazy game
